Welcome

Feast Fest 2017: Trends in Astronomy is a workshop organised to celebrate the 90th birthday of Professor Michael Feast and funded by the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO), the National Research Foundation, the University of Cape Town (UCT), and the University of the Western Cape (UWC).

Venue: SAAO, Cape Town

Date: 31 July 2017

The scientific focus is new astronomy. What can be done with the world leading telescopes in South Africa? What sort of instruments should we develop to complement those being designed elsewhere for future ground based telescopes and instruments in space? Where are the best opportunities and what kind of collaborations will allow the growing African community to take advantage of them? Where do we need to develop better theory and better data processing techniques to make full use of our observations or to link the theory/models to the observations.

The meeting will be entirely plenary speakers, mostly local senior people from SAAO, SKA SA, UCT, AIMS and UWC, but also some postdocs who are participating in the new opportunities and international speakers from Canada, Japan, UK and USA. The talks, covering theory, observation and instrumentation, will be aimed at PhD students.

All are welcome to attend, please see the registration page for further information.
